Translators benefit from viewing multiple resources and can be inspired by seeing the way difficult concepts and idioms are handled. To facilitate this, Paratext downloads texts directly from the Digital Bible Library that have been licenced for use in Bible translation. Users may select from all the resources that have been licensed to them according to their group in the diagram below. They will also see available updates to resources that are already installed.
The inner circle is a smaller group of users but they get the most resources as the preferred licence of many rights-holders. The outer circle is a much larger group of users, but have fewer resources that come to them.
Qualified Translators in Approved Organisations – (Licence 1a)* Translation personnel in organisations who adhere to the FOBAI standards of Bible Translation.
All Qualified Translators – (Licence 1a+b)* Translation personnel in organisations who adhere to the FOBAI standards, and Independent Translators who also adhere to FOBAI, having been vetted by the Paratext Board of Governors.
All Paratext Users – (Licence 2)* Accessible to anyone who downloads and registers to use Paratext.
In addition, rights-holders can licence texts for Specific organisations or users – (Licence 1c)*
*The specific licence numbers in parentheses allow rights-holders to designate which group to share with in the DBL. Rights-holders are encouraged to make their resources available to All Qualified Translators, or to the largest group they can allow.
Text Resources are protected so that they are not shared beyond the terms of the licence.
- The texts are only visible to the translators or organisations they are licenced to.
- They are downloaded in encrypted format directly from the Digital Bible Library into Paratext
- Printing and exporting are disabled.
- Copying and pasting the text is restricted to only about 150 characters.
- When a user’s Paratext licence is revoked, the texts become inaccessible on their computer.
Availability of Paratext 7 Resources
The resources that were available in Paratext 7 were licenced for a limited term. As we transition to 8, those licences are being renegotiated. To see where we are in the process, you may consult this spreadsheet. If the resource you are waiting for is not yet available, it could be due to one of the following reasons:
- We have not been able to contact the publisher.
- We are still pursuing permissions.
- We are waiting for the resource to be added to the DBL.
- Permission has been denied for use in Paratext.
Denied resources may not continue to be used legally in either Paratext 7 or 8. Instead, translators should access them in Translator’s Workplace (if available), or should use commercially available print and electronic copies.
If you have a relationship with any of the publishers, please share this information with them and direct them to contact the Paratext Board of Governors.
You may help request additional text resources for Paratext, provided that the texts exist in the Digital Bible Library . You can search the the DBL website to see if the text is listed there. If it is, use this form to request that the resource be shared with you and other Paratext users.
